I’ve Been Everywhere by Hank Snow

Did I ever tell you fellers about the time I tried to start my own band called “Mike Check and The Markets”? We needed a hit for our first single and it so happened that Australian songwriter Geoff Mack (who wrote an Australian version of this song) thought that an American version of “I’ve Been Everywhere” would work well in the North American Market. Well ole Mike offered to co-write the re-write of the song (another one that I never received credit or royalties for!), made a list of all the North American radio markets that I worked in and then incorporated them into the song lyrics. Well when it came time to record the single, the producers weren’t too happy with my singing and said that my voice sounded too boring (ole Mike boring???) and made the song feel like it was “six hours long”? Well let’s just say that my rendition of the song, as well as “Mike Check and The Markets”, didn’t “work well” and didn’t go “anywhere”. It was then offered to Hank Snow to sing, and ole Mike will admit, his sped-up sounding version sounds…fascinating.
